Korean Wrinkle Treatment: Why Seoul Dermatologists Treat Lines in Layers, Not With One Injection

Dr. Min Jeong7 min read
Dr. Min Jeong with a patient at REDI Dermatology in Seoul, discussing korean wrinkle treatment

Hello, I'm Dr. Min Jeong, founding director of REDI Dermatology in Seoul. I trained in hospital dermatology, with residency and board certification at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, and later served as Chief of Dermatology at the Medical Office of Korea's Ministry of National Defense. Patients from abroad often ask me for "a Korean wrinkle treatment" as if it were one product they could pick up while in Seoul.

The short answer: it isn't one product. What people admire about Korean wrinkle treatment is a way of working: a line is diagnosed by its cause, then treated at the layer where it starts, often with two or three treatments in small amounts rather than one big one. Movement lines, thinning-skin lines and folds from sagging need different tools. Please read to the end, because a lot of disappointing results come from treating the wrong layer.

Type of line What drives it Tools on our menu Downtime (our data)
Fine lines from movement Repeated muscle action Skin Botox, micro-dosed Little to none
Crepey, papery lines Thinning dermal collagen Sofwave, Juvelook Little to none; Juvelook minimal
Etched, scar-like lines Long-standing creasing Ultra Clear plus a booster One to three days
Folds from sagging Descending tissue, lost support Ultherapy Prime and boosters Minimal

One wrinkle, three different problems

Look closely at any line and ask three questions. Does it deepen when you make an expression? Does the skin around it look thin and crinkled even at rest? Does it sit at the edge of an area that has dropped or hollowed?

A single line can answer yes to all three, which is exactly why one treatment rarely fixes it. Marionette lines, the ones running down from the corners of the mouth, are a good example. The heavier cheek fat above descends, the chin below loses volume, and the ligaments and muscles that hold everything up weaken. A valley forms at the boundary. No amount of massage or gua sha changes that structure; it may feel pleasant, but the line comes back.

A free tip I give everyone: notice whether you clench your mouth without realising it. Many people do. Relaxing the mouth area through the day slows the deepening of lines around it.

Korean wrinkle relaxers: less, shallower, designed

When people search for Korean wrinkle relaxers, they usually mean botulinum toxin. My own approach was shaped by a mistake early in my training. As a resident, I treated my mother's forehead and used more than she needed, expecting a smoother result. Her eyelids felt heavy for a month or two. I learned then that a millimetre and a tiny difference in amount change the outcome completely.

That is why, in wrinkle work, I lean on skin botox: very small amounts spread shallowly across the skin rather than a large dose into one muscle. It softens fine lines and texture without freezing expression, and it helps with sebum and pores too. The design matters more than the total amount; the same dose spread evenly by rote works less well than one placed where your skin needs it. I explain the difference from conventional wrinkle injections in my skin botox article.

To keep botulinum toxin working over the years, I ask patients to follow three habits:

  1. Keep sessions at least three months apart.
  2. Treat the areas you need in one sitting rather than splitting them over several weeks.
  3. Stay with one doctor who knows your muscles and your cumulative dose, rather than moving between clinics for offers.

Korean eye wrinkle treatment and forehead lines

Around the eyes, most lines are crepey rather than deep. The skin is thin, so I work in the dermis: Sofwave, which delivers ultrasound at about 1.5 mm with surface cooling, and collagen boosters such as Juvelook, which stimulate your own collagen gradually rather than filling. Skin botox can soften the surface. If the eye area is also sagging, a deeper lift joins the plan.

On the forehead, the question is whether the lines come from movement, from thin skin, or from brows that have dropped and make you lift them all day. Heavy-handed treatment of the forehead is what caused my mother's heavy eyelids, so I treat it conservatively and look at the brows first.

Lines that behave like scars

Vertical lines above the upper lip are among the hardest to treat. The mouth moves in every direction as you speak and eat, and the skin there is thin. Once a line is etched in, it has effectively become a scar, and relaxing the muscle alone won't smooth it.

For these, my Korean wrinkle treatment plan has three parts:

  • A tiny dose of skin botox to reduce the pull that keeps folding the line, small enough that speaking and eating feel normal.
  • Ultra Clear, a cold-ablative laser, to resurface the etched line while limiting heat damage. Recovery is one to three days of possible redness or mild swelling.
  • Juveacell, an ECM booster, to support the skin as it rebuilds.

I describe it to patients as a hard workout followed by a proper meal: the laser makes the skin work, and the booster gives it what it needs to rebuild well. Results vary by individual.

Planning a Korean wrinkle treatment visit to Seoul

Most of these treatments are gentle on a schedule. Skin botox and Sofwave have little to none in the way of downtime, and Juvelook is minimal, with small bumps or mild redness that usually settles quickly. Ultra Clear is the one to place early in a trip, since it needs one to three days of recovery.

Wrinkle work is gradual. Skin botox takes effect over the following days and weeks, and collagen-driven change from boosters or Sofwave builds over weeks to months. You will judge the result at home, so we keep in touch online, and photos in the same light are the most useful thing you can send.

English- and Chinese-speaking interpreters are on site, and a specialist reads your skin in person before anything is recommended; the same doctor performs the treatment. These are elective, non-insured aesthetic treatments, and the plan and cost are set out at consultation. For shallow lines specifically, my fine lines guide goes into more detail.

Takeaways

  • Korean wrinkle treatment is a method, not a product: diagnose the cause, then treat the layer.
  • Movement lines, thinning-skin lines, etched lines and sagging folds each need different tools, often combined in small amounts.
  • Skin botox works shallowly in small, designed amounts; spacing sessions and staying with one doctor help it keep working.
  • Etched lines above the lip may need resurfacing and a booster alongside skin botox.
  • Most options have little downtime; Ultra Clear needs one to three days. Results vary by individual.

Frequently asked

What makes Korean wrinkle treatment different?

The main difference is the habit of treating a wrinkle by its cause and layer rather than with one product. Muscle movement, thinning skin and sagging or volume loss each call for a different tool, and they are often combined in small, carefully placed amounts.

What is skin botox, and is it a wrinkle relaxer?

Skin botox places very small amounts of botulinum toxin into the superficial skin, spread shallowly and broadly. It softens fine lines and texture and helps with sebum and pores without freezing expression. It is not the same as a conventional wrinkle relaxer injected into a muscle.

What helps wrinkles around the eyes?

For fine, crepey lines, Sofwave, which works at about 1.5 mm in the mid-dermis, and collagen boosters such as Juvelook are common choices. Skin botox can soften the surface. When the eye area is also sagging, a deeper lift may be part of the plan.

Can deep lines above the lip be treated?

Etched vertical lines above the lip behave almost like scars, so relaxing the muscle alone is not enough. I combine a tiny dose of skin botox, a resurfacing laser such as Ultra Clear, and a regenerative booster such as Juveacell. Results vary by individual.

How often can I have botulinum toxin without it losing effect?

I keep sessions at least three months apart, treat the areas you need in one sitting rather than splitting them over weeks, and prefer that one doctor who knows your cumulative dose treats you consistently.

Skin Botox

Skin Botox

Smooths wrinkles, refines pores, and provides an overall lifting effect β€” effective for improving firmness and facial redness.

Sofwave

Sofwave

A non-invasive lift delivering ultrasound energy optimized for the 1.5 mm depth where wrinkles form. A powerful cooling system that senses skin temperature in real time minimizes discomfort while effectively smoothing wrinkles, even on delicate areas like the face and neck.

Juvelook Skin Booster

Juvelook Skin Booster

Juvelook is a PDLLA (poly-D,L-lactide) collagen booster that stimulates your skin's own collagen production to improve pores, firmness, fine lines, scars, and overall tone. Unlike a filler that simply adds volume, it helps the skin rebuild itself, so results develop naturally over time. At REDI, the blend and hydration protocol was refined by our Juvelook key doctor, and we match the delivery method β€” Dermashine Pro, Potenza, MIRAJET, Double Tite, and more β€” to your specific skin condition. With 15,000+ vials of hands-on experience, we know that the same product can deliver very different results depending on technique.

Ultra Clear

Ultra Clear

Juveacell

Juveacell

Directly restores the extracellular matrix (ECM) within the skin that has broken down with age. It prompts the skin to produce its own collagen and elastin, effectively repairing damaged skin.

Ultherapy Prime

Ultherapy Prime

Ultherapy Prime is a globally validated non-surgical facelift. It delivers focused ultrasound energy precisely to the deep SMAS layer β€” the same layer addressed in surgical lifts β€” to contract the tissue that drives sagging and lift the contour without any incision. It can help with a softening jawline, neck, and eye area, and because it works by stimulating new collagen, results settle in gradually. At REDI, we diagnose your skin thickness and degree of laxity first, then design the depth and number of shots accordingly β€” prioritizing a lift that is both safe and genuinely noticeable over raw intensity.
