Sofwave Korea: Why Seoul Took to This Lift for Thin Faces, and Who Should Skip It

Dr. Min Jeong7 min read
Dr. Min Jeong with a patient at REDI Dermatology in Seoul, discussing sofwave korea

Hello, I'm Dr. Min Jeong, the dermatologist who founded REDI Dermatology in Seoul. I trained at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, where I completed residency and board certification in dermatology, and later served as Chief of Dermatology at the Medical Office of Korea's Ministry of National Defense. Sofwave Korea enquiries have grown quickly in my inbox, and they almost always carry the same two questions: is it really that popular here, and is it right for my face?

The short answer: yes, Sofwave has caught on in Seoul, and for a clear reason. It works in the mid-dermis, about 1.5 mm down, where fine lines and early loss of firmness start, and it protects the surface while doing so. That makes it a strong fit for thin faces and crepey skin. It is a weaker fit for heavy sagging or a full face. Please read to the end, because I'll give you the same self-check I use in consultation.

Sofwave Korea at a glance
Energy Ultrasound, focused in the mid-dermis
Depth About 1.5 mm
Time About 30 minutes
Downtime (our data) Little to none
Suits Fine lines, thin or crepey skin, early laxity, lean faces
Less suited Thick skin, heavy sagging, a lot of facial fat

Korean patients were quick to take to Sofwave, and at the start of 2026 I told my Korean readers I expected much of the interest in firming lifts to move towards it. Three things drive that.

Thin faces. Many patients in Korea have lean faces and fear the hollow-cheek look they have seen after aggressive deep lifts. Sofwave works in the dermis rather than on fat.

Work culture. People here want to be back at a desk, in makeup, the next morning. Little to no downtime matters.

Fine lines rather than jowls. A lot of early ageing shows up as crinkling around the eyes and mouth before any real sagging appears. That is precisely Sofwave's layer.

Popular does not mean universal, and a good share of Sofwave Korea consultations end with me suggesting something else. I would rather you understand why it works than choose it because it is in fashion.

How it works: a magnifying glass, not a hot plate

The comparison I use is a magnifying glass in sunlight. The glass itself stays cool, but the point where the light converges gets hot. Sofwave focuses ultrasound energy into the mid-dermis in the same way, while a cooling system that senses skin temperature in real time keeps the surface protected.

That is different from monopolar radiofrequency such as Thermage, which pushes heat in from the surface; I explain that approach in my Thermage article. With surface-driven heat, the layer just under the skin tends to be the hottest, which limits how much energy can safely reach deeper.

It also differs from older ultrasound tips aimed at the same shallow depth. Those delivered energy to small points, and raising the energy risked surface burns. Sofwave fires each pulse as a row of parallel beams in a broad, cylinder-shaped zone, covering more tissue per pulse. So if a clinic quotes you a "shot count", it is not comparable with a count for Ultherapy.

A five-point self-check before you book Sofwave Korea

These are the questions I put to patients. If three or more apply to you, Sofwave is likely worth a serious look.

  1. Fine, crinkly lines around the eyes or mouth bother you more than deep folds such as nasolabial lines.
  2. Your skin feels as if it is getting thinner, more paper-like.
  3. Your face is lean, and you have avoided deeper ultrasound lifts because you worry about hollow cheeks.
  4. You need to be back at work, or in makeup, the same day or the next.
  5. You want gradual, natural change rather than something anyone would notice overnight.

Now the other side. If you gently lift your cheeks in the mirror and look years younger, the deeper structure has dropped, and Sofwave alone won't be enough. If your skin is thick, or your face carries a lot of fat, you are likely to feel less from it; Ultherapy Prime or Onda usually makes more sense. When deeper sagging and surface lines are both present, combining a deeper lift with Sofwave is often the sensible plan. I compare the two in my Ultherapy vs Sofwave guide.

"Sofwave clinic Gangnam": what to ask wherever you go

Many visitors narrow their Sofwave Korea search to a clinic in Gangnam, because that is the district they know. REDI is in Seocho-gu, the neighbouring district, in Bangbae-dong, between Bangbae Station on Line 2 and Naebang Station on Line 7. Wherever you book, the questions that matter are the same:

  • Who reads your skin, and who performs the treatment? At REDI, a specialist reads your skin in person before anything is recommended, and the same doctor performs the treatment.
  • Will they tell you if you're not a candidate? A good Sofwave clinic should turn some people away and suggest something deeper.
  • How are energy and coverage set for your face? Thin areas, bony areas and the neck need different handling.

Planning a Sofwave Korea trip

Sofwave takes about 30 minutes, and downtime is little to none. Mild redness may appear and usually settles quickly, so most people carry on with their plans the same day. It suits even very short stays, and it can often be paired with a skin booster in the same visit if your skin needs both. We decide that at consultation.

What it does not give is an instant result. You may notice some tightening early, but the change builds gradually as collagen forms, so you will judge it at home rather than on the flight. Photos taken in the same light every few weeks let me follow your progress online.

English- and Chinese-speaking interpreters are on site for consultation and treatment. Sofwave is an elective, non-insured aesthetic treatment, and the plan and cost are set out at consultation. If fine lines are your main concern, my fine lines guide covers the other options.

Takeaways

  • Sofwave Korea interest is high because it suits lean faces, crepey skin and schedules with no room for downtime.
  • It focuses ultrasound at about 1.5 mm in the mid-dermis while cooling the surface.
  • It is a strong fit for fine lines and early laxity, and a weak fit for thick skin, heavy sagging or a full face.
  • Downtime is little to none; results build gradually. Results vary by individual.
  • Ask any clinic who assesses you, who treats you, and whether they would ever say no.

Frequently asked

Is Sofwave popular in Korea?

It has become one of the lifts patients ask about most in Seoul, largely because it suits thin faces and busy schedules. Popularity alone is not a reason to choose it, though. It works best for fine lines and early loss of firmness, not heavy sagging.

What depth does Sofwave treat?

Sofwave delivers ultrasound energy optimised for a depth of about 1.5 mm, in the mid-dermis where fine lines form. A cooling system that senses skin temperature in real time protects the surface during treatment.

Will Sofwave make my cheeks look hollow?

Sofwave works in the dermis rather than on facial fat, which is why I often choose it for lean faces that worry about hollowing after deeper lifts. Every face is still assessed first, and results vary by individual.

Who should not choose Sofwave?

People with thick skin or a lot of facial fat tend to feel less change from Sofwave alone. For them, a deeper ultrasound lift or a fat-targeting device such as Onda is usually a better starting point.

Can I go back to work or sightseeing after Sofwave?

Yes. Downtime is little to none, and most people carry on with their day right after treatment. That is one reason it suits visitors on a short stay.
